I've worked retail, and I know it's a shit show.  The pay is crap, the hours are awful, and people are generally the worst when in Customer Mode.  However, some of those money problems are your fault, too.  This isn't just limited to people who work in retail either.  Anyone can mismanage their money.
Perhpas the most egregious offense is the morning Star Bucks or the daily energy drink.  Many of my previous co-workers would spend $5 a day on these things without computing the monthly cost of $150.  If you work 80 hours a month at $10 an hour, then that means you're working 15 hours every month just to get something tasty to drink every morning.
There's also the cell phone bill.  I get that it's a necessity these days, and I remember a time when we didn't have them, but now your adding $100 to your monthly expenses.  Now we're up to $250, and we still have rent to pay.  Maybe you have a car, too?  That comes with insurance, if you're honest.  Do you like to drink alchohol every night because some of your favorite tv characters make it look so good?
Not to mention the student loans, which seem to be getting more costly despite our insistence that they stop.
Anyway, my point is that maybe those of us at the bottom should stop pretending that we're rock stars.  Take some time to calculate all of your expenses versus all of your earnings and find a way to trim the fat off.  The greatest gains are done in tiny, daily increments over the span of years.  Remember that with enough pressure and time, a lump of coal can become a diamond.
Stop living hand to mouth.  Pay check to pay check.  Figure out what you REALLY want -what you can REALLY afford, and live within your means.
Is this message reaching anyone?  I hope it does...

I spent the majority of my childhood watching tv and making comic book characters. After high school I did one tour of college and one of the Army. I have two happy kids and one ex-wife who is understandably aggravated by my presence. Nowadays I bounce between trucking and nice stints of time off that allow me to work on my novel. Who knows? Maybe one day I'll post a chapter up here. :-)
